How to Select a Logistics School
Some schools have created programs for warehouse workers, due to the growing demand for education specifically on logistics. Companies want them to understand how their jobs impact their customers and how what they do in one department could affect operations at other locations as well, says Kathleen Hedland, director of education and research at the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
There are a variety of degrees available, but all provide foundation courses on basic concepts such as supply chain management and operations procurement transport networks, inventory management and warehousing. Some universities offer specializations in e-commerce, logistics for retail, transportation, logistical analysis and global logistics management.
Graduates can be employed in roles such as logisticians, supply chain managers purchasing agents industrial production managers and distribution managers. They can also seek certifications like the Certified Supply Chain Manager (CSCM) or the Certified Public Contract Manager (CPCM) to boost their career prospects.
Check if the school is accredited. This can be accomplished by a group such as the U.S. Department of Education, or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. These organisations recognize 8,200 institutions and 44,000 programs. Look for a university with a good student-to-teacher-ratio, as this will allow you to receive a high-quality education.
Some colleges offer hybrid or online programs, which provide classroom instruction in conjunction with online learning opportunities. This model may be appealing to employees who prefer flexibility in their schedules or aren’t able to take classes in a traditional manner. Some online-only courses offer associate’s degrees or read this certificates while other programs provide bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
